August Plans & Events in London

This August is looking as busy as ever as lockdown lifts and people begging to live their ‘normal lives’ – now with venues open and the nod to dance we have gathered some amazing experiences that you need to watch out for!

Olli Hull's ‘ACT NORMAL’ Exhibition at The Hull Room

London-based artist and designer Olli Hull will hold his first solo exhibition titled ‘Act Normal’ on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th of August, from 11 am to 8 pm. The two-day exhibition will be held at The Hull Room, 1b Saltoun Road, SW2 1EN, entry is free and there will be complimentary drinks served on both days from 6.00 pm.

‘Act Normal’ is an introspective exploration of Olli’s own experiences as a young queer person living through a time of increasing conflict, isolation, and fear. Through Olli’s paintings and wearable artwork, the exhibition aims to demonstrate ways in which art and fashion can be used as a form of protest and self-realisation.

Creating wearable art is something that appeals to me, I have always wanted to make a positive impact on the world and I am determined to do that with fashion and art.
— Olli Hull, 2021

Olli’s up-cycled wearable artwork expresses the increasing need for sustainable practices, and his collection of reworked wedding dresses make comments on the impact that consumer culture, fast fashion, and societal norms are having on our mental health and the planet. In his own words, “The wedding dress for me is a potent symbol of outdated traditions that perpetuate unsustainable practices and damaging norms. Reworking these dresses felt like I got to take back something from a tradition and a belief system that for years has rejected me and my community.”

The layout of ‘Act Normal’ aims to blur the lines between art and fashion, painting, and installation. The showcase will consist of a series of wall hanging paintings, and a series of hand-painted wedding dresses which will be displayed on mannequins throughout the space.

There will be a series of railing and pedestals displaying Olli’s latest collection of up-cycled wearable artwork which is currently available to buy at the event or his online store. As well as a space for attendees to try on different garments and the first 50 people to attend on each of the days get a free hand-painted gift from Olli himself! You can get tickets here.

Retropxssy's - Album Launch

On Wednesday 25th of August, London-based artist Retropxssy is hosting her album launch at 7 pm in Low Profile House on Vale Road, N4 1PT.

The upcoming album titled ‘Road Ahead’ on August 26th is unafraid of vulnerability, as retro navigates through dark worlds. This body of work contains 10 tracks and is an alternative hip hop dream - always eclectic, eccentric, punk as hell!

‘Road Ahead’ is an album born in transition, written over the chaotic currents of the past year. But it seems that retro has found her footing - with her, we move forward, we carry each other when we're exhausted, we dance.

Retro’s signature stance is how she expresses freedom, conveyed in the lyrics. She embraces the underground, seizing pulsing punk energy from the London scene, moulding it with a gentle touch to make a sound as delicate as it is raw.

At the event there will be tons of music, live from some of the best in London Town - alternative hip hop, punk, UK garage and tunes that fit no genre but make your body groove! There will also be art all night long from the incredible Akiya and That Spaghetti Brand (Jaffar Ali).

If you’re looking to hold your own events please feel free to drop us a line and we’ll be happy to see how we can help!
