One Year Since #Teamgoho Got a Brazilian Twist
One year ago today pubs were reopening in London. I didn't really feel like queuing for hours for a pint, but I texted my friend saying 'I think we have to go to the pub - I just got a job offer and we need to celebrate!
How crazy it's been a year since I joined #TeamGoho!
When I received Stacey's proposal a year ago, I felt mixed emotions. The challenges of a post-pandemic world, in a new country I had never worked in... I had no idea what to expect. A year later, all I can think about is every successful campaign, trip or event I've been a part of... and can't be more excited about everything that is yet to come. Time really flew by, but at the same time, it feels like I've been here for a decade.
I recently read an article on Linkedin about the difficulties of working in a second language. I can't express how much I related to each line of that text. Yes, working in a second language means taking 10 minutes to explain something that should take 30 seconds, mentally translating some meetings, and taking notes in a new language that only you understand. On top of that, there's this insecurity of never being able to show your real personality in another language - I mean, I can't pronounce some words correctly (Like. Worcestershire Sauce. Why?), let alone try to be funny, creative and smart in English. How can you be sure an idea is good without having ever worked in the local market?
Almost 4 years ago, when I left Brazil, I used to say that I would never live in London. 2 years later, when I decided to move over here, a former boss said my 'London Dream' wouldn't last long as I would give up quite soon and go back home.
Well, turns out I didn't. I can't say it's easy - I still remember when I arrived in London, after lockdown 1, working as a freelancer and wondering what I was doing at all. But it all depends on the people you surround yourself with, and luckily, I've met a wonderful bunch here. I`ve joined a team that understands me, teaches me and makes me laugh every day - and doesn't judge me every time I pull a door that says "push" (Portuguese speakers will get that one). Today I feel free to be 100% myself (which can be embarrassing tbh), and create great projects with and for people who carry inspiring stories. Working in a second language isn't easy, but it is really easy to work among amazing people.
To #TeamGoho: you rock! Thank you for this crazy year. I couldn't have picked a better team. And if I could give advice to people in the same situation as me, I would say: make sure you surround yourself with the best people and the best beer (liking potatoes might help too) ;)
